Introductory Strategy for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
Starting off in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is crucial for your overall experience. How can you ensure a comfortable beginning? Below are some gameplay strategies provided by “Bamboo,” featuring recommendations for newcomers on optimal starting routes. We hope this helps you enhance your journey.
Optimal Starting Route
I've devised a comfortable opening pathway: head west initially, making your way to the camp where the public cat master resides. Along the route, you can find a woodcutter's cabin.
(As shown in the image below, marked in red. The camp is just a bit north of here.)
Horse Acquisition
At the woodcutter's home, there's a decent horse valued at over a thousand. Steal it at midnight and continue towards the camp. First, locate the horse trader in the black market to sell it for over three hundred coins as starting capital.
Note that the horse trader will inform you, “I start at eight!”
- This means they begin operations at 8 AM. They wake up between 6-7 AM, so if you attempt to converse with them too early or too late, trading will be impossible.
- If it’s currently nighttime, use the time traveling back and forth to pass time. Ensure you do not dismount the horse you've stolen; if you dismount, it might sneak away, leaving you confused upon turning back (no extra implications here).
Buying Horses
If you find a horse you like, you can also approach the horse trader for black market purchasing to keep the horse you’ve stolen. Buying horses can be expensive, often reaching into the thousands. The trader sells the horse at its full value, so walk for now and save enough to unlock horse ownership later.
Unlocking Campsites
With your newfound three hundred coins, head to unlock a fantastic campsite that is vital to your journey. This location will never be claimed by enemies as far as I’ve experienced. Moreover, it has a teleportation point for quick access, allowing you to rest rapidly in future travels. However, traveling through this site may lead to random encounters.
- Such encounters include merchants, aid-seeking travelers, and enemies.
(The campsite is near the teleportation point marked in blue; once you make a complete circle, you’ll spot it. Anyone who can't see it is just a fool!)
Unlocking Your Adventure in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
After unlocking the teleportation points, we head to the Tahov blacksmith to buy a two-handed sword, exchanging the small initial sword we have, which is just a temporary weapon. Since the game doesn't provide a shield at the start, there's no need to cling to any sentimental attachment to the one-handed sword; isn't it better to go straight for the greatsword? (Look for the blacksmith in the yellow circle)
Now you have the means to effortlessly engage in combat, effectively harming enemies, but your gear is still quite poor, only your damage output has increased. Therefore, I suggest exploring the map to clear fog and admire the scenery while learning about theft and lockpicking, both of which are interesting mechanics and are well-designed.
You will encounter many events along the way, such as camps where some may challenge you to duels, while others might want to play dice games. More importantly, you can also find rogue camps to loot.
Fighting more enemies and stealing frequently will equip you with usable gear. I recommend prioritizing the bandit camps for theft and lockpicking, as chests are more concentrated there, and NPCs are denser, making it the perfect place to gather resources or level up skills.
Be aware that all equipment has durability. While the game appears realistic, it showcases a fundamentalist approach; for instance, food spoiling isn't represented by images or names, and weapon deterioration doesn't show parts breaking down. Instead, it simply gives you a number indicating how much durability is left, similar to exercising in a fantasy; even if your body isn't trained, at least your brain cells are used.
Once food durability turns red, it can no longer be consumed. As the durability of weapons and gear diminishes, their attributes will also decline. Thus, frequent visits to the blacksmith for repairs are necessary. But don't worry, in the early game, obtaining five to six thousand coins is quite easy, and it’s more than sufficient.
If you need to kill some time, start from the excellent camping spot on the left side of the map and travel back and forth to the town on the right side. The more you travel, the more hunger you'll lose, and you'll also become fatigued, so always keep an eye on sleeping and eating. After a while of casual play, you can proceed with the main quests.
It is generally recommended to choose the blacksmith route. Because when you have crafted a pile of heavy armor, it is hard to accept the lightweight approach of a thief. If you opt for the mill route, you might find it difficult to handle document retrieval if you're not thinking clearly, as the heavy armor can be quite cumbersome. However, in the first playthrough, it's unlikely anyone would refuse the defensive capabilities of heavy armor.
Let's not delve too much into spoilers here. Once you unlock the blacksmith path, make sure to continue down it without getting sidetracked; otherwise, certain storyline missions in the game may fail due to an internal timer expiring. When that happens, you'll be forced to pick the mill route instead.
When you fail, you'll find that you can no longer enter the small house where you live near the blacksmith, as the door is locked. Your path will be severed, just as mine was. If you mess up your route and don’t know where to sleep, or find other locations too troublesome, I recommend heading straight to the camp marked by the blue circle.
Additionally, it is highly recommended to use the weight mod and the save anywhere mod, as they significantly reduce the game's difficulty. Simply increasing your weight limit by a few hundred makes a big difference. Without those additional hundreds, I must admit, you can't afford to wander randomly; just picking up a couple of items can max out your carrying capacity. However, with the mod, you can continuously farm resources. The save feature is primarily to allow you to save at any moment, for example, when you encounter unknown events while traveling. You can press 1 to approach and assess the situation, load the scene, and immediately press F5 to save. If you encounter enemies, you'll see if you can defeat them; if it's other NPCs, you'll maintain dialogue progress. You can even save progress after defeating each enemy, allowing you to play at your own pace.
