When it was time to complete the quest, regardless of what I selected, I ended up giving everything away. If you save your game and then reload, there will only be one item left. Giving it to the monk yields nothing, but handing it over to the church gives you 275 coins. Make sure to go straight to the area after questioning the lumberjack; otherwise, you will miss out on everything.
