Monster Hunter Wilds Gun Mechanics and Skill Options
The gun in Monster Hunter Wilds has undergone significant changes compared to its predecessor. In this article, we will share the control schemes and skill branches for guns in Monster Hunter Wilds, hoping it will be useful to you.

Horizontal Sweep
The core of gun skill branching in this game, necessary for deriving various gun styles. The primary distinction among several horizontal sweeps lies in the stepping distance.
1. Shot → Horizontal Sweep
A very flexible opening move. Shot can be performed while moving in eight directions (forward, backward, left, right, left-forward, right-forward, left-backward, right-backward). Horizontal sweep allows movement in five directions (forward, left, right, left-forward, right-forward). This provides an easy way to position yourself at mid-range.
2. Straight Thrust → Straight Thrust → Horizontal Sweep / Guard Thrust → Guard Thrust → Horizontal Sweep
This approach lacks mobility and is significantly slower than the shot. The guard thrust is slightly faster.
代碼 | 描述 |
---|---|
Horizontal Sweep | 核心的招式派生,踏步距離的不同 |
Shot | 靈活的起手招式,可向多方向移動 |
Straight Thrust | 打擊速度較慢,缺乏移動 |
Defense / Precision Defense (GP)
By raising the shield or quickly reloading the weapon at the moment an enemy attack lands, you can trigger Precision Defense. The performance of the gun's shield has finally fulfilled its intended purpose. Almost all moves allow you to raise the shield directly afterward, enabling all defense-related actions, such as reloading, defensive thrusts, or Dragon Wind Cannon.
1. Full Bullet Fire
Benefiting from significant enhancements to the gun shield performance, you can directly execute Full Bullet Fire after a GP and then raise the shield to reload GP. This allows for quick bursts of high damage, performing exceptionally well in fast-paced attacks and defenses.
2. Dragon Cannon
The forward and backward swinging motions have been greatly shortened, and the speed to raise the shield is incredibly fast; the performance of the skill itself is outstanding. Unfortunately, it conflicts with Dragon Full Bullet Fire. To promote the new skill, the original chain "Full Bullet Fire → Dragon Cannon" has been removed. Using the Dragon Cannon without Dragon ammo turns it into a weak thrust, which is the only skill besides Dragon Wind Cannon that cannot quickly branch into a shield raise.
3. Quick Reload / Special Quick Reload
For those aiming to maximize their combat efficiency in Monster Hunter Wilds, mastering Quick Reload and its special variant is essential to maintaining your defense and attack capabilities.
Special Rapid Reload Techniques
Special rapid reload techniques prevent operational errors that may lead to a misfire when empty. This is a great optimization. However, with the introduction of GP-derived techniques, the downward smash no longer needs to be closely tied to rapid reload. Additionally, the importance of loading the Dragon Cannons has greatly increased, making rapid reloads that can't load the Dragon Cannons obsolete in this version.
Dragon Cannon All-Bullet Launch
The newly introduced powerful move for the gunner in Monster Hunter Wilds offers impressive damage output with a complete combo. However, it has a longer duration, and most of the damage is concentrated in the latter half of the combo, so it’s important to pay attention to the timing of its use.
1. Focused Attraction
When targeting monsters in focused mode, most gunner moves can benefit from attraction bonuses, increasing the distance of forward movement. The Dragon Cannon all-bullet launch and the Dragon Cannons are among the best in this regard. Using the combination "Step Cancel → Move Cannon Fire → Move Sweep → Dragon Cannon All-Bullet Launch/Dragon Cannon" allows for extensive forward movement. It can be said that the gunner still maintains its unique walking style.
2. Continuous Loading of Dragon Cannon All-Bullet Launch
In order to effectively execute this powerful move, mastering the techniques of continuous loading is crucial. The intricate timing and coordination required can significantly enhance your gameplay experience.
Damage Composition and Dragon Cannons
The damage composition is essentially consistent with full dragon shot. However, the number of sparks from the Dragon Cannons has significantly increased. The concentrating absorption effect is not quite as effective as with the full dragon shot. At both the beginning and end of an attack, there is a defense check, but it does not trigger GP. When facing powerful moves, even if the defense is successful, subsequent actions will still be interrupted by stiffness.
Dragon Cannon Overview
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Dragon Cannon has truly become the strongest technique for gunner classes, moving beyond being just a gimmick. However, it cannot hit teammates anymore. What happens in a team setting? Are we meant to attack monsters instead? In my opinion, this is the worst change for gunners in this game.
1. There is no difference in damage or range between the standing and crouching Dragon Cannons, but the charging time for the crouching version is halved. The damage judgment times of the Dragon Cannon decrease with increased distance. Therefore, although this version of the Dragon Cannon has an extraordinarily ridiculous range, you should still try to engage at close range.
2. When the cannon hits a monster, it can additionally replenish the Dragon Cannon gauge. The base replenishment for spread shots is particularly high, while the base for blast shots is very low.
Charge Shot Mechanics and Strategy
Charge shots can further increase the Dragon Cannon slot recovery. The spread gun can be used to try a charge shot to scratch your blade, followed by the Dragon Cannon strategy.
1. Unlike the first Dragon Cannon shot, the second shot (determined by the ammunition count in the top left corner, not the derived order) has a significantly larger recoil that needs to be taken into account.
Other Derivatives
1. The stepping thrust combined with the concentrated mode offers exceptional mobility and is quite useful in specific scenarios. The action sequence "stepping cancel → mobile shot → dashing step → stepping cancel" is arguably the fastest movement method for wild guns in Monster Hunter Wilds.
2. Unlike previous games where a charge shot consumed a single bullet, in Monster Hunter Wilds, the bullets consumed and damage dealt will increase with the charge time. The more bullets consumed, the greater the recoil after the move. It’s advisable to avoid large recoil; firing during medium recoil (using about half the bullets) is recommended.
3. The concentrated Dragon Cannon piercing can be stopped early by pressing the defense button when it hasn't hit a wound, and once it does hit, you can press the concentrated attack button again to trigger an early explosion.
Introduction to Gunlance Mechanics
The Gunlance is notoriously difficult to use, and can be considered one of the biggest drawbacks of the weapon class.
Missing Elements in the Gunlance Mechanics
There are a few critical components lacking in the mechanics that make Gunlance harder to use effectively. For instance, when you're out of ammunition or during a red explosion, executing a mid-air action will result in a jumping strike rather than a full aerial attack. Also, mounted attacks have yet to be fully incorporated. However, these aspects may not be incredibly vital.
Endgame Weapon Choices (Spoilers Ahead)
Expected Types:
- Normal Type: Flame Dracophage-derived - Flame Spitting Gunlance
- Blast Type: Caeon-derived - White Cannon
- Spread Type: Guardian Blade Dragon-derived - Guardian Blade Gunlance "Boss"
The mechanical weapon's shelling power is limited to LV2, making its current practicality questionable.
