Fishing for Large Fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
To unlock large fish, you need to follow the fishing quest "Target: Giant" from the 【Red Forest】 base 【Kaniya】. After that, you can use the newly acquired large fish baits: 【Jointed Lure】, 【Starry Fish Lure】, and 【Tentacle Lure】 to catch large fish.
We recommend fishing for large fish at the giant lake located in 【Red Forest (Upper Area) Location 17】 (look for the lake deep past the waterfall). For specific location reference, please see the image below.
Fishing Points for Big Fish and Squid in Monster Hunter Wilds
Next to the giant lake, there will be the Camp Area 17 at the Lakeside. It is recommended to set up camp here for quick travel or to switch the weather and time of day.
No matter the weather, there is a chance of splashing water on the lake surface. Alma will trigger a voice line indicating that "where there is splashing, there are fish schools.” Here, you can use any bait to fish, and both regular fish and big fish could be caught. Be careful as flying dragons and debris may also appear on the lake surface; you can use a grappling hook to drive away the flying dragons and remove the debris.
Big fish are more likely to appear in extreme weather, especially the Giant Squid (Invasion Squid).
Catching Big Fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
When fishing for big catches, first choose the bait and cast your line. If no fish bites, you can use the indicated button to jiggle the rod and entice a larger fish to take the bait. Once a fish bites, move the rod in the direction of the fish's movement (using the left stick or WAD keys). When the fish gets tired, alternate pulling the left stick up and down to reel in (for PC users, alternate pressing the W/S keys; the hunter will visibly lift the rod). Repeat this process 3-4 times until you successfully reel the big fish in.
