Introduction
The Sword and Shield in Monster Hunter Wilds has greatly enhanced output capabilities after the latest update, and its combo execution is simplified. Below is a practical combo guide for the Sword and Shield brought to you by "zeldaaa," which we hope will be useful for all players.
Understanding the Sword and Shield
Recently, Monster Hunter Wilds introduced a comprehensive update affecting the Sword and Shield. This update includes significant improvements in action values, canceling moves, derived techniques, and the precise timing of defensive actions.
As seasoned hunters, we only need to master three techniques to withstand and endure monster attacks effectively. After a monster is downed, it is easy to unleash high damage output with just a few button presses. There are no complicated combos nor precise timing for button presses needed.
Defensive Slash
Defensive Slash is the core of the Sword and Shield in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Operation Method: Hold R2 to raise your shield for defense. While in a defensive state, pressing the circle button will unleash a Defensive Slash.
The Power of Guard Slash
By holding R2, the entire process remains in a defensive state, allowing you to continuously execute Guard Slashes. You won't take much damage from the monster's small attacks. Even better, each time you swing, at the moment of swinging, you will have a "Perfect Guard" judgment. Successful Perfect Guards will enhance your defensive abilities. You can directly withstand many powerful moves from monsters.
Let's take a look at the practical effects. When a monster is about to unleash a terrifying special attack, we can simply stand still, lightly tap L1 to face the monster, and then hold R2 to perform the Guard Slash in place. The faster you tap, the easier it is to trigger the Perfect Guard. While your character swinging at the air may look funny, you don't have to worry about timing your defense. You can confidently withstand the monster's powerful attacks. This is the strongest first move of the Great Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds - the Guard Slash.
Sliding Slash
Although holding the Guard Slash makes it hard to get killed, the damage from the Guard Slash is quite low, meaning you'll have to hit the monster for a long time to deal a significant amount of damage. Additionally, the swinging range is somewhat limited, often causing you to miss the target monster.
Learning the Second Technique - Slide Slash
Now, we will learn the second technique - the Slide Slash. Hold down R2 to defend, then press the triangle button to slide forward while swinging your weapon. After the swing, press the circle button to perform an additional defensive slash. This attack has significantly higher damage than a normal defensive slash. Once you master this technique, you’ll notice a substantial increase in damage.
Let's take a look at some practical gameplay situations. When facing a large monster, continuously hold R2, then press triangle, followed by circle. Keep circulating this combination to achieve a smooth sliding motion beneath the monster, showcasing extraordinary agility and inflicting considerable damage.
However, remember that during the sliding phase, there is no defensive state, so be mindful of your direction. Avoid pressing the buttons recklessly, or you might find yourself sliding right into the monster’s attack range, which could be disastrous. Always be prepared to face the monster and use our first technique: the consecutive defensive slash.

Effective Target Damage Strategies in Monster Hunter Wilds
While mastering the first two techniques can help you handle about 80–90% of situations, you will still encounter scenarios such as monsters falling over, getting paralyzed, or returning to their nests to sleep. In such moments, how can we effectively deliver targeted damage to the monsters? Let me introduce a very simple method. Enter the training ground in the Forsaken Sandy Plains, pull out your long sword, and refer to the button tutorial in the bottom left corner. The top row features what we need—“High-Power Combos”. The execution method is as follows: press the circle button three times, then press triangle + circle together two times.
The action will start with three shield bashes, followed by a slash, and finally a jump with the backside thrusting into the ground, commonly known as the “Insert Rice”. The damage from these last two actions is extraordinarily high. In real combat, remember to prioritize striking the monster's head, as the initial three shield bashes utilizing the circle button will deliver a stunning effect when landing on the head. Once enough stun value accumulates on the head, the monster will get dazed on the ground, providing you an opportunity for additional targeted damage.
If utilized effectively, this can significantly enhance our hunting efficiency!
Weapon Recommendations
Lastly, let’s discuss the weapon I recommend for use.
Choose Weapons with Defense Performance
The key is to select weapons that enhance our defense strength. After a guard, both the knockback and stamina drain will be less. Thus, after defeating the Cling Frog, we can continuously use the Cling Frog Stick. After defeating the Marsh Blasting Dragon, we can upgrade the Cling Frog Stick to Level II.
Mining and Weapon Upgrades
Once we enter the Icefield map, find a few mines to dig. Use the initial Hope Sword to descend and follow the mineral material derivation route. Creating the Initial Iron Sword can also be upgraded to Level II.
Final Weapon Choice
Finally, after defeating the Lockblade Dragon, we can craft weapons from the Lockblade Dragon. This weapon can be used all the way until the advanced quests after completing the game.
